Before welcoming the new year, every household prepares carefully and thoroughly for Ngày Táo Quân on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month, to send the Kitchen Gods off to Heaven — where they report to the Jade Emperor on the family's affairs down on earth, along with the family's wishes for the coming new year. But where does this day come from, and how did this custom begin?
